Life Insurance Company (ALICO) is a member company of American International
Group, Inc. (AIG). AIG is the world's leading international insurance and financial services organization, with operations in approximately 130 countries and jurisdictions. AIG member companies serve commercial, institutional and individual customers through the most extensive worldwide property-casuality and life insurance networks of any insurer. In the United States, AIG is the largest underwriter of commercial and industrial insurance and a top-ranked life insurer through AIG American General. AIG's global businesses also include financial services, retirement savings and asset management. American Life Insurance Company (ALICO), incorporated in Delaware, is
one of the largest international life insurance companies in the world,
whose branches had more than $166.5 billion life insurance in force as
of 12/31/02. ALICO's branches and subsidiaries market a broad range of
traditional life and other insurance products, such as supplemental medical
and personal accident products, group life, annuities, pension and medical
business, through a network of some 31,000 agents and brokers. ALICO's
insurance operations are located in more than 50 countries worldwide with
its main presence in Japan, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and
portions of Africa and the Caribbean. In the 1950's ALICO entered the Caribbean and the Middle East. ALICO entered Greece in 1964. In 1968, ALICO became part of AIG, Inc. In 1969, ALICO moved its headquarters from Bermuda to Wilmington, Delaware. In 1972, ALICO was granted a full yen license in Japan and entered France. In the decade of the 1990s, ALICO established
a presence in Central Europe, opening life insurance operations in Poland
(1990), Hungary (1990), Czech Republic (1992), Slovakia (1995), Romania
(1998), Bulgaria (1999) and Ukraine (2002). ALICO received approval to
form an Open Pension Fund in Poland in 1998 and together with a partner,
purchased 78.23% of the share capital of Bulgarian Post Bank the same
year. ALICO established life insurance subsidiaries in Colombia and Italy,
and entered Pakistan in 1995. In 1997, ALICO received a license for a
life company in Egypt, formed a life company in Peru, received a life
insurance license for its wholly-owned subsidiary in Uruguay and established
an insurance company joint-venture with Unibanco in Brazil. In 2001, ALICO
received permission to establish a branch in Nepal and AIG Life (Ireland)
began its operations offering unit-linked insurance products in select
member countries of the European Union. |
